Religion and Politics

Please God, don't call me to go into politics. Please ....

And yet, things tweek me. Liberal Christians need to make strong statements and expose Pharisaical doctrines and politics that mascarade as Christianity.

Below is an excerpt from a Mother Jones article. YAY for John Sugg. Now, what does the Jesus in me do??

"News: Let others worry about the rapture: For the increasingly powerful Christian Reconstruction movement, the task is to establish the Kingdom of God right now—from the courthouse to the White House.

Reconstruction’s premises may fly in the face of mainstream Christianity, and some of its leaders’ beliefs would probably surprise even the movement’s own foot soldiers. But what has made the theology such an explosive addition to public life is not its dogma on individual issues so much as its trumpet call to action. This is a faith in which religion is not an influence on politics; it is politics."

Well, that's totally scawy. Just what we need: to live in a nation that's become a great big whacked-out cult.

I don't know what to do, offhand, besides offer a very different Xtianity!

People didn't believe that the nazi's were really gonna do much more than be obnoxious. - Today I am applying for a job at CTS. They have a new program, "Lesbian and Gay Religious Studies", and they are looking for a student Director. It is a grant funded program to "... help increase communication between academic research in lgbt studies and pastors, laypeople and activists toward the goal of greater gender justice in church and society".

Hey, did you see the petition for pastors going around on behalf of the Virginian man who was denied membership? I can email it to you if you'd like. UMC people are really protesting this decision.
* Yep, we need a very different Christianity for sure! One where the Beatitudes replace the 10 Commandments.

Please do email-- my address is in my profile. I have not seen the petition yet.

Actually, I'm okay with the Ten Commandments. I just feel strongly that they should be read through the Holiness Code and/or the Beatitudes!

I wouldn't say I'm against the Ten Commandments, but I think they are viewed in a vacuum and like you suggest, should be read through some kind of context. The "TC" seemed to be being used by the "Right" as a standard of morality in a way that seems like idolatry.

are you out of your mind?!? that position looked appealing to me until i remembered that i can barely get stuff done with CCT and my classes. maybe you're only taking one class outside of CCT, or they're easier than mine will be or something.

and maybe i'm just a lot more overwhelmed than you are. i just hope that if you get it, you have enough time to relax and love your spirit.

kisses, beth

i am a little out of my mind, actually. i talked to dow about it and he strongly advised me to drop one of my classes. i was taking global sensitivity and people and faith 2 this spring along with cct. so if i get it i'll probably drop p&f2, since it is not a prereq for anything.

i also talked to smegan about it cause i didn't want to ruin our relationship with any workaholic tendencies, and she agreed with dow's suggestion. let's hope if this is a bad idea that i don't get the job...

must admit ... i'm really nervous about getting it AND not getting it.

kisses back,
